The woman adjusted the hair net before wiping the sweat from her brow with a sleeve. She smiled over at the younger man next to her as both of them set back to work on the huge pots of stew they were making. Past the sounds of the kitchen, the numerous voices, all melding together in one song of murmurs, let everyone who was cooking know the soup kitchen would be full tonight.
You knew enough to know to leave well enough alone but you wouldn't
The new daycare worker was a hit. The small group of babies, about 5 of them, seemed to soothe so easily when she was around. Cradling them close, she would sing to them, softly, as she rocked in a chair. How she managed to hold two at a time and not tire, no one could really figure out. She seemed too young to have children. "I just love them," she would answer simply.
I drive myself crazy tryin' to stay out of my own way, the messes that I make but my secrets are so safe.
